Ginger with a botanical name, Zingiber officinale, is an erect, herbaceous perennial plant in the family Zingiberaceae grown for its edible rhizome,The rhizome (underground part of the stem) is the part commonly used as a spice. It is often called ginger root, or simply ginger. Ginger is also called Ata-ile or Atale in yoruba, also called Cithar in hausa, it was originated from China spread to other part of Asia and subsequently West Africa and the carribbean. India is the largest producer of ginger beating China which comes second. Nigeria remains the largest producer of ginger in Africa and fourth largest producer of ginger in the world.
