HEALTH BENEFIT OF EFO -AMUNUTUTU(MALABAR SPINACH)

Efo Amunututu also called Malabar Spinach with a Scientific Name: Basella alba is common  in the south western part of Nigeria, some refer it as Indian Spinach, but the common English names include Ceylon spinach, buffalo spinach, creeping spinach, climbing spinach, red vine spinach, Indian spinach, Surinam spinach, Chinese spinach, Vietmese spinach, broad bologi.

Malabar spinach(Efo Amunututu) is an inherent to tropical Southern Asia which was originated from Srilanka or India, Indonesia. Malabar spinach is found plentiful in Philippines, Malaysia, Caribbean, Tropical Africa, Tropical South America and Southeast of Brazil. Due to the adaptation to various soils as well as climates, Malabar spinach is treated as the best tropical Spinach in the tropical world.

Malabar spinach (Efo Amunututu)  is rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, and calcium, it is an excellent source of beta-carotene, a powerful disease fighting anti-oxidant , very rich in protein and good source of soluble fibre.

Efo Amunututu, as the name implies in Yoruba means  a vegetable that has soothing relief for the stomach, it is a natural coolant, including it in your regular diet  can help to prevent weakness of the bone, cardiovascular diseases, anemia, cancer, and it has so many traditional uses good for the body.

 

Efo-Amunututu is a summer crop and grows best in the summer months in the tropical areas. The plants can thrive in extreme hot temperatures and cool temperatures cause the plants to creep, so you can plan growing Efo-Amunututu during the summer month

 

Efo Amunututu comes in two varieties the pale green and red stemmed, both taste lemon and pepper when consume raw, but when cooked it taste regular like normal spinach.

It is grown as an annual, but grows like a perennial in regions that are frost free

Malabar spinach also needs constant moisture to prevent the blossoming, which will turn the leaves bitter — ideally an area with a warm, rainy climate for optimal Malabar spinach care and growth
